Here Comes The Serious Bit

Okay, since I'm just stumbling over the amount of songs I'm suddenly remembering existed, I think I'm going to start a section for all these songs. Hmmm, what to call it? I want it be something obscure but funny.

I'll call the section Atlas Shrugged. There. That book never made sense to me, and it takes up approx. twelve years of your life to read. But the title is awesome.

So for this Atlas Shrugged I'm gonna talk about Death Cab for Cutie.

Back in the day, I used to serriously be down with indie pop. Yes, that is what Death Cab is. I used to worship at the feet of Camera Obscura, Mates of State, etc. In the old school days when Subterranean was an actual show and not just a mindless block of videos, I would stay up till 1 am on Sunday nights and record all of the info about songs I liked. The video for this song really didn't pull me in, but the lyrics are incredible. This was off their '05 album, Plans.

I don't really bother with Death Cab anymore, not for dislike, but for lack of interest, 'cause it's all starting to sound the same to me. But I will always love this song.

If you can't understand them in the video, you can get the lyrics right here.

Bring The Blow, Bring The Noise!

I forgot this song existed too! I'm going to have start a feature on songs I used to blast back in the day.

Back when I was still in the pussyfooting stage with my boyfriend, I heard this song. You know that stage, when you're good friends with a dude and you're dropping hints that you want to get serious but just not sure if the dude feels the same way about you...that's the pussyfooting stage.

In '06, the Blow came out with Paper Televisions. I heard this song on the radio, and became intrigued.

Anyway, I listened to this song hours on end. It was my jam. I sang to it constantly. It fit my situation perfectly because we were five years apart and he lived in East Atlanta while I lived in the suburbs. We eventually got it together, and this song got me through it.

Every time I sing to this song I tear up.

Maybe I'm Right, Maybe I'm Wrong

I totally forgot this song existed too! Back in the day, this shit was MUH JAM! I used to be really into British pop and power pop, like Mink, Matt & Kim and TheDeathSet. Well, I kind of still am.

The Sunshine Underground is a little band from Leeds, which I happened upon when I was looking through all the bands in Forward, Russia!'s Top 8. They are really, really awesome and came out with this album, Raise The Alarm in '06. I know, it's almost retro.

This song always makes me think of playing in the leaves in Autumn. Weird, I know.

"Commercial Breakdown"

British accents make me feel warm inside.

Damn, I Miss The West Coast

I almost forgot this song existed. I first heard it on Indie 103 (the best radio station ever) in Santa Monica. Originally, I thought Of Montreal just had a new single. They didn't. I really miss living and being in California. I cannot wait to go back.

Coconut Records is the musical project of actor Jason Schwartzman. His album, Nighttiming is incredible and I heard he plays all of the instruments himself.

This song always makes me cry when I listen to it.

"West Coast"

Will someone take me back with them? I'll pay rent on time, trust.

Deuces,
Erika
